茅岩河位于张家界市永定区澧水流域上游，全程约50公里，两岸全是峭壁悬崖，名岩河，亦称为茅岩河。河床宽30—50米，落差64米，滩潭相接，穿峡而出，常年水清见底。平均流量146—168立方米/秒，最大洪水流量7370—9120立方米/秒。两岸峭壁对峙成高峡，沟谷幽深，林木繁茂，洞穴密布，流泉飞瀑30多处悬挂于绝壁之上，土家山寨散布于两岸山顶、河畔。

张家界茅岩河漂流 漂流险趣
　　茅岩河，山青水碧，岩险石怪，滩多浪急，野趣横生，古朴而神奇的景观比比皆是。1986年，永定区旅游局受长江探险漂流的启发，在国内首创茅岩河橡皮舟漂流旅游项目。茅岩河有“百里画廊”之誉，其峰回水转，曲尽诗情画意，乘橡皮舟漂游茅岩河，日行百里，可观赏秀丽的峡谷风光，又可领略那浪遏飞舟的漂流险趣。真可谓“不似三峡，胜似三峡”。上游的风障溪一带，峰奇石怪、涧深莫测，闻水鸣而不见瀑，在嗥声而不辨物，至今为一神秘禁地。顺水而下有“血门沟”、“洞子坊”、“茅岩滩”、“覃后洞”、“钓鱼台”、“夹耳沟”、“回龙阁”、“水洞子瀑布”等30多处景观。岩河峡是茅岩河奇险风光之最。两岸峭壁高达500米左右，滩多潭深，浪大水急，两岸飞瀑流泉多且壮观，有的自峰顶一泻到底，有的循山岩一瀑三叠。水洞子瀑布是茅岩河最壮观的瀑布，一股地下水自70米高空的大山洞中喷射而出，顺坡崖缝隙而走，时开时合，似碎玉遍山，如摧冰下滑，然后从悬崖上跌落下泻，临河边悬崖成数十米宽巨瀑。
　　乘橡皮舟漂过撑架岩以后，进入青鱼潭与周家河，则是十里长潭，水平如镜，游人坐在船上，轻松自如，放眼看去，两岸田园风光如画。

茅岩河漂流 享用温泉
　　茅岩河边的泉水最具特色，尤以温泉出名。温泉在温塘镇澧水下游古渡口两岸。右岸温泉与河面平接，水温50℃左右，当地山民常在此浆洗沐浴；左岸温泉高出河面20米，水温37—39℃，每小时涌流量300多吨。经鉴测，温泉水属优质矿泉水，可防治疾病。在温泉涌出口修建了浴室，可供游人四季享用。

张家界茅岩河九天洞AAAA级旅游风景区，西起桑植县九天洞，经千年古镇苦竹寨，到有神秘峡谷之称的苦竹河大峡谷和有百里画廊及“天下第一漂”之称的茅岩河漂流，止于南方最大的石窟群玉皇石窟，全长100余公里，是一个集自然风光、人文景观、历史文化、民俗风情于一体的风景名胜区，景区于2006年被授予国家AAAA级旅游风景区称号，为张家界市5条旅游精品游览线之一，入选湖南“潇湘百景”。是张家界旅游的重要组成部分。
亚洲第一洞——九天洞：因有九个天窗与地面相通而得名，洞分上、中、下三层，总面积250万平方米，洞内堆珍叠玉、千姿百态，石笋、石柱、石钟乳层层遍布，造型之美，构造之奇，是世所罕见的地下瑰宝，有“亚洲第一洞” 之美称。1995年，该洞被定为“国际溶洞协会探险基地”，同时被吸收为国际溶洞协会会员。
千年古寨——苦竹寨：建于唐宋，盛于明清。历经两千年风雨沧桑，烽火墙、吊脚楼、石板街、围塘火，茅古斯、摆手舞、咚咚喹、对山歌，四月八拜牛王，六月六祭覃垕，日出而作，日落而息，浓郁的土家民俗风情，传统的湘西农家生活写照。
神秘大峡谷——苦竹河峡谷：沿途绝壁雄居，怪石重叠，鱼欢鸟唱，飞瀑流泉。游船经过之处，两岸林木苍翠，绝壁横生，是土、苗、白等多民族居住地，沿途看民俗风情、唱山歌，体验农家生产、生活、观土家英雄覃垕六百年前的古战场，听战马嘶鸣，处处有景。其中独具特色的江中半岛覃垕王园林，占地80多亩，几人合抱的千年古树随处可见，到处鸟语花香，瓜果常鲜，是理想的生态休闲之所。
百里画廊——茅岩河漂流：茅岩河风光秀丽、景色迷人，素有“百里画廊”之誉，是湖南省省级风景名胜区，茅岩河漂流全长20公里，落差66米，是国内最早的旅游漂流项目，有“天下第一漂”之称，同时也是国内最大和最安全的旅游漂流项目。驾橡皮舟沿茅岩河漂流而下，千刃石壁迎面扑来，戏江流之碧玉，赏田园无限风光，群山叠翠，峡谷生辉，滩多水急，景观独特，打水仗、对山歌、品野味、饮清泉，与浪共舞，有惊无险，在历尽山重水复、柳暗花明之后，那种惬意，简直妙不可言。
南方最大石窟群——玉皇石窟：石窟位于张家界城西七公里的麻空山南麓。为清代乡坤李京开独资捐修。整座洞窟东西长300余米，共计8洞，分上、中、下三层，有雕像10尊，石刻50余处，是湖南省乃至中国南方地区至今保存最完整的一个最大的石窟群，是湖南省重点文物保护单位。

Jiutian Cave Scenic Spot at Maoyan River, Zhangjiajie, starts from Jiutain Cave of Sangzhi County in the west, through Kuzhu Stockaded Village with over thousand years to Kuzhu River Great Gorge, a mysterious gorge, and Maoyan River Drift with Hundred-li gallery and “the first drift in the world”, till Yuhuang Grotto, the largest grotto group in the south. With a total length over 100 km, it is a famous scenic spot integrated natural scenery, human landscape, history and culture, folk-custom interest and charm. It is one of five fine travel lines in Zhangjiajie City and has been listed in “hundred sceneries of Xiaoxiang”, an important part for travel in Zhangjiajie.

The first cave in Asia — Jiutian Cave: It is named for its nine skylights connected with the ground. The cave is divided into the upper, middle and lower layers with a total area of 2.5 million square meters, in which there are layers of stalagmites, stelaes and stalactites in beautiful shapes with peculiar structures everywhere. With the uncommon underground treasure, it is honored as “the first cave in Asia”. In 1995, it was designated as the “the exploration base for the International Water-Eroded Cave Association”, meantime, it was absorbed as its member.

Ancient stockaded village over thousand years — Kuzhu Stockaded Village: Established in the times of Tang and Song Dynasties, it was flourished in Ming and Qing Dynasties and over two thousand years of changes. With beacon-fire wals, suspended buildings, stone streets, Weitang Fire, Maogusi, hands waggle dance, Dongdongkui, antiphonal singing of folk songs, sacrifice for oxen king on 8th April, memorial ceremony for Qin Hou on 6th June, it is characterized by intense custom and interest of Tujia nationality; starting work at the sunrise and stopping work at the sundown portrays the rural life in the west Hunan.

Mysterious Great Gorge — Kuzhu River Gorge: There are grand cliffs, grotesquerie stones, joyous fishes and singing birds, fly falls and flow springs. In a pleasure-boat, you can appreciate lush forests and precipices at both sides. Since it is a habitation for Tujia, Miao and Bai nationalities, you may hear folk songs, experience rural production and life, and visits the ancient battle field and even with whinny of war horses where Qin Hou, the hero of Tujia nationality, fought six hundreds years ago. Most specifically, King Qin Hou Garden at the peninsula in the river has an area of over 80 mu. There are thousand-year trees everywhere that several persons can only surround a tree by getting their arms around. With singing birds, fragrant flowers, fresh melons and fruits, it is an ideal ecological place for rest and recreation at leisure.

Hundred-li gallery — Maoyan River Drift: With beautiful scenery, it was honored as “Hundred-li Gallery” and is a provincial level scenic spot in Hunan Province. Maoyan River drift, 20 km in length and 66 m in fall head, it is the earliest drift program for travel at home. Except the good name of “the first drift in the world”, it is also the biggest and safest drift program for travel. Down along Maoyan River in a rubber boat, immeasurably high cliffs head on. Playing with the jade water in the river and appreciating limitless field landscape like green hills, splendor gorges, many beaches and rapid water, playing water fight, antiphonal singing folk songs, tasting wild foods and drinking clear spring, alarmingly dangerous dancing with waves, it is wonderful beyond words with such please and satisfaction.

The greatest grotto group in the south — Yuhuang (Jade Emperor) Grotto: Located at the southern foot of Makong Mountain, 7 km away from the west of Zhangjiajie City, it was established with contributions of Li Jingkai, a country gentleman of Qing Dynasty. The whole cavern is more than 300 m from the east to the west with eight caves of upper, middle and lower layers totally, ten statues and over 50 stone inscriptions. As the key protective cultural relics of Hunan Province, It is the biggest, most complete grotto group in Hunan Province and even in the south of China.
